ASM3 reactor model

The successor to the ASM1 node — a live EVOLV reactor twin built on the Activated Sludge Model No. 3 (ASM3). Unlike the first node, this one is location-agnostic: it models any activated-sludge reactor rather than one specific plant.

What ASM3 adds

ASM1 assumed bacteria eat their food and grow at the same instant. ASM3 — introduced by the IWA task group in 1999 — recognises that micro-organisms first store the substrate internally and only then grow on those stored reserves. Decoupling uptake from growth makes the model more realistic and numerically more stable, which is exactly what you want when it has to run continuously as a digital twin (Wikipedia: Activated sludge model).

Origin

Developed as a TU Delft master project under R&D-lab supervision. Estimated value roughly €10k/year through better-validated reactor control.
